July Activity Suggestions for Middle School Students
and Their Parents

Sun. Mon. Tues. Wed. Thurs. Fri. Sat.
1Let your child plant some flowers that bloom well in the late summer, along with the responsibility to care for them. 2Spread out a deck of cards face down. Take turns drawing two.  How many can you and your child match? 3Have your child compose something creative, like a story, poem, song or comic strip. 4Think about what your child has done responsibly, and offer a sincere compliment about it. 5Play a geography guessing game, asking questions like, "Where does Queen Elizabeth live?" (England) 6Ask your child to share a favorite magazine or CD with you.  Discuss what makes it so appealing. 7How is your child doing on the summer reading chart? Take a trip to the library.
8How many ways can your child make a dollar using different combinations of coins? 9Quiz your child on the U.S. state capitals and Canadian provincial capitals. 10Watch a public TV show with your child. Choose a biography or one about nature or history. 11Have your child write a story centering on a favorite animal. 12See how far your child can get doing the newspaper crossword puzzle.  It's ok to use the dictionary. 13Let your child stay up a little later tonight to read by flashlight.  Or go outside to count stars together. 14Encourage your child to write in a journal about a strong emotion, such as anger or love.
15Discuss the last time you and your child disagreed.  How could you both have handled it differently? 16Try a "round robin" story with your child.  Each of you gets to tell the story for three minute intervals. 17Ask your child to list five things to love about your country in a journal.  What things would your child change? 18Have your child make a map of your neighborhood.  Include as many landmarks as possible. 19Let your child look in a closet for one minute, then shut the door and list what's inside. 20If your child could open a store, what kind would it be? Why? 21Give your child a specific compliment today.
22Have an international night. Serve food from a different country.  Find the country on a map. 23Have your child pretend to be a clothes designer, and show you some sketches and designs. 24Have your child list 10 foods to eat plenty of, like vegetables, and a second list of 'treats only' food. 25Challenge your child to express opinions and views by asking for them - and listening to them. 26Ask your child to use a newspaper headline to predict what an article will be about. 27Have your child list ten things s/he can do now, but won't be able to do in six months. 28Go for a jog or a walk with your child today.  Stretch your muscles before you start.
29Have your child observe animals and insects in your backyard and record some observations. 30Open the dictionary and find a word that is new to everyone in the family.  Try to use it twice today. 31Tell your child your family history.  Give birthplaces, occupations and other interesting facts.
