Make Every Day a Celebration
There are fun and silly holidays in addition to the serious ones we remember each year.  This is a partial list of some of the unique holidays as well as the traditional favorites.

Monday, August 13
International Lefthanders Day – Sponsored by the International Lefthanders Club, this annual event encourages lefthanded people to celebrate and increases public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being lefthanded. 

Tuesday, August 14
National Navajo Code Talkers Day By Presidential proclamation, this day honors the members of the Navajo Code Talkers who served with the Marines in World War II and used their tribal languages as a battlefield code.  Read the official proclamation here.
V-J Day - On August 14, 1945, the Japanese government cabled to the U.S. their surrender. This is the date of most modern observances. On August 15, 1945, news of the surrender was announced to the world. This sparked spontaneous celebrations over the final ending of World War II.  On September 2, 1945, a formal surrender ceremony was held in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Missouri. At the time, President Truman declared September 2 to be VJ Day.
Social Security Day – Commemorating the day in 1935 that the Social Security Act became law.

Wednesday, August 15
Woodstock Day – Commemorating the famous Woodstock Music Festival that rocked the world from August 15-17, 1969.
Sit Back and Relax Day – Reminding us that there is only one month of summer left.  Enjoy every moment!

Thursday, August 16
Bratwurst Festival - Every August, there's a 2 day celebration commemorating Bratwurst in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Bratwurst is a big, fat sausage of German origin.
Roller Coaster Day – Marking the day in 1898 that the roller coaster was patented.


Friday, August 17
Davy Crockett Day – Honoring the American frontiersman who was born on this date in 1786.  Learn more about this American legend here.

Saturday, August 18
National Homeless Animals Day – Calling attention to our less fortunate four-legged friends
Bad Poetry Day – A day to create or read some really bad verses.  Why? Maybe to help us appreciate good poetry when we see it!

Sunday, August 19
Aviation Day – In honor of aviator Orville Wright’s birthday (1871) this celebrates the accomplishments of the Wright brothers and other early aviation and space pioneers.
