December Activity Suggestions for Elementary Students
and Their Parents

Sun. Mon. Tues. Wed. Thurs. Fri. Sat.
1 Look in the newspaper for a listing of holiday events.  Plan to attend one this month. 2 Visit the library.  Check out a book about the holiday traditions around the world. 3 Does your child know who to call in an emergency?  Make a list for your refrigerator.  Practice what to say. 4 Think of something nice your child can do for a neighbor or older friend.
5 Holidays have you feeling hassled?  Share the responsibilities.  As kids help, they appreciate holidays even more. 6 Talk with your child about courage.  Look for examples of people who demonstrate courage. 7 Talk about how your family can do something for others this holiday season.  Do it as a family. 8 With your child, make a paper chain to count down the number of days left until January 1. 9 Teach your child how to make paper snowflakes.  Use some to decorate your windows. 10 Today is Human Rights Day.  Talk with your child about rights and responsibilities. 11 Trace around your child on a big piece of paper, then work together on researching and drawing what the insides look like.
12 Make your own greeting cards.  Check the greeting cards in stores for ideas and write your own messages. 13 Make a TV viewing schedule this week.  Use it to plan how you'll limit your viewing. 14 Do a crossword puzzle with your child.  It's a great way to learn new words. 15 Studies show today's kids suffer from "time poverty" - lack of time with caring adults.  Spend more time together. 16 Have your child label four sheets of paper: Spring, Summer, Fall Winter.  Write descriptive words for each season. 17 Make glitter.  Mix 1/4 tsp food coloring to 2 tblsp salt.  Spread on cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 10 minutes.  Cool.  18 As school vacation approaches, have your child make a list of things to do when there's nothing to do.
19 Give your child some large pieces of white paper to decorate for homemade wrapping paper. 20 At dinner tonight, each of you talk about one gift you'd like to receive that costs no money. 21 Tonight is the longest night of the year.  Give everyone a flashlight and read in bed tonight. 22 Encourage your child to talk with a student who is home from college about what college is like. 23 When you're in the car, have your child estimate how far it is to your destination.  Use the odometer to check. 24 Read a favorite holiday story, poem or religious story with your child. 25 During the holidays, have your child talk to  older relatives about their childhood days.
26 Check the newspaper to see if there's a place you and your child can go roller skating together. 27 Help your child make a list of of the good and bad sides of all available choices before making a decision. 28 Find out what's inside a seed.  Soak a dry bean overnight, remove the coat and pull the halves apart. 29 Take a walk with your child.  Which trees are evergreen?  Which are deciduous? 30 Have a contest.  Who can name the most parts of the body?  (Organs count, too) 31 Help your child create a time line of the past year.
