Grandparents: The Tough Issues

Being exposed to drug and alcohol use is a frightening fact of life for many children/teens today.  It can be difficult for anyone to approach the topic, and at times grandparents feel out of their depth when the subject comes up.  Some pointers for talking to your grandchildren about substance use and abuse include:

Y Learn about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs so that you are prepared to talk to your grandchildren.  You can find a lot of information in our Drug Free Kids section, along with more ideas on discussing the facts with kids.
Y Tell them how much you care
Y Let them know how disappointed you would be in them if they took unhealthy risks
Y Ask them what they’ve heard about drugs
Y Explain what alcohol, tobacco and other drugs are
Y Talk about how harmful they can be
Y Ask them if they’ve heard about any kids in their school using drugs or drinking alcohol
Y Ask them why they think kids get involved with drugs or drinking
Y Talk to them about how to say “NO”
Y The most important thing is to express how you would feel if your grandchild drank alcohol, smoked or used drugs

Be sure your grandchildren know they can count on your support.  Being confident in your relationship makes it easier for them to seek your advice and to share their problems with you.  You can be a great boost to your grandchild’s self-esteem and general well being.
