August Parent Pointer Calendar for Families with High School Students

Sun. Mon. Tues. Wed. Thurs. Fri. Sat.
1 Does your teen need to visit the dentist?  Make an appointment now to avoid missing any school. 2 Find quotes that will motivate your teen.  Post a favorite one on the mirror your teen uses.
3 Have your teen check out the ads in the paper for the best buys on back-to-school items. 4 Start to get back on a school schedule. Encourage your teen to go to bed earlier. 5 Does your teen's school have a website?  Check it out - it may list required school supplies.  6 Ask your teen to put gas in the car.  Together, check the oil and other fluids.  Knowing basic car maintenance is important for every driver. 7 Talk with your teen about how you appreciate your education, or why you wish you'd learned more. 8 Encourage your teen to take some cookies to an elderly neighbor or family friend. 9 Are you planning a trip?  Give your teen a map to plan the route.
10 Plan a family picnic.  Let your teen plan and prepare the meal. 11 Do you know your teen's friends?  Make sure they feel welcome in your home. 12 Is your teen bored or restless?  See if your library or other local organizations need volunteers. 13 Watch a TV show with your teen.  Talk about the values depicted, and how they are similar or different from yours. 14 Let your teen bake cookies today.  Review math skills by doubling the recipe. 15 Check out a book on constellations.  Read it with your teen and do some star watching together tonight. 16 Give your teen a budget and the responsibility of grocery shopping for the week.
17 Be tourists in your own hometown today.  Visit a local historical site with your teen. 18 Buy a few postcards from your town.  Ask your teen to send them to friends or family. 19 Encourage your teen to explore colleges.  Check out their websites. 20 Talk with your teen about the school year.  What are some goals to focus on? 21 For today, talk with your teen as you would to a friend or co-worker.  How does your teen respond? 22 Encourage your teen to invite friends over for pizza and a video.  Learn their names. 23 Teens often feel peer pressure to try alcohol.  Talk to your teen about ways to say "no".
24 Give your teen a special hug today. 25 Can your teen sew on a button?  Mend a hem?  Work together on these important life skills. 26 Most high schools distribute calendars at the beginning of the year.  Mark important dates. 27 Get to know your teen's teachers.  Don't forget to meet the counselors, too. 28 Ask your teen for suggestions of nutritious snacks to have on hand. 29 Does your teen want to work this school year?  Emphasize the fact that schoolwork comes first. 30 Talk with your teen about the things you did this summer.  What are three things you'll remember?
31 Read the comics together today.
