December Parent Pointer Calendar for Families with High School Students

Sun. Mon. Tues. Wed. Thurs. Fri. Sat.
1 While  riding in the car, ask your teen, "Is there anything you'd like to talk about?"  Then listen. 2 Look at your own calendar.  Can you get to the school at least once this month to help? 3 Kids can be strong in some subjects, but not in others.  it may not be realistic to expect your teen to raise a grade to an A. 4 Invite your teen's friends to spend time at your house.  You'll get to know them and your own teen better.
5 Encourage your teen to do one thing that's been put off. 6 When your teen brings home a grade, focus first on what was learned, not on the grade. 7 Teens remember more from two 20-minute study sessions than from one 40-minute session. 8 Encourage your teen to write a letter to a teacher or coach who has been a positive influence. 9 Books and magazines make great gifts for teens.  So do "learn a new word each day" calendars. 10 Talk about how you and your teen could do something for others this holiday season.  Set aside time to do it. 11 Do chores together.  Shovel snow or paint bookshelves.  It helps teens learn life skills.
12 Many new movies come out during the holidays.  Make plans to see one with your teen. 13 Suggest that your teen ask near the end of a study session, "Can I do one more thing?"  Small things add up. 14 If your teen fails at something, find at least one thing to learn from the experience. 15 Create a schedule for use of the family computer to avoid arguments. 16 Teens, like adults, feel pressured for time.  Talk about how to set priorities and balance time. 17 Big test today?  Make sure your teen is in school.  This is part of the responsibility of preparing for adult life. 18 Start a family savings plan for a special goal.  Plan the goal together and talk about how all will contribute.
19 Look in the want ads to see what jobs are available.  How can your teen prepare for a good job? 20 Talk with your teen about the very best present ever.  what made it special?. 21 Ask your teen what are the most important qualities in a friendship. 22 Discuss with your teen what things you both could do to conserve energy and natural resources. 23 When your teen overreacts, it's important for you not to.  Set a time to talk later when you both are in control. 24 Create a new family tradition today.  ask your teen for ideas. 25 Give your teen the best gift - an IOU for time spent together.
26 Encourage your teen to talk with a student who home from college about what college is like. 27 Teen often tell you as much through behavior as through words.  "Listen" to your teen's body language. 28 Help your teen create a private dictionary, using a small notebook to write down unfamiliar words from reading material. 29 Challenge everyone to learn - and use - three new words a day.  That's over 1,000 words a year! 30 Be aware that teenage holiday parties often involve alcohol.  Call the host's parents before you say it's okay to go. 31 Teach your teen, "A goal is a dream with a deadline."
